@edgarblythe,
edgar (if you should read this)...
Earlier tonight I watched a DVD of various folk performing Leonard Cohen's songs (I'm Your Man) & one of the things he spoke about was this song. (I'd been wondering about it.). He said it was about attempting things that were difficult & you didn't want to do, failing, accepting the failure & maintaining your self respect/dignity anyway. Acceptance. ("Ah!", I thought to myself.)
Though, of course, he expressed this a lot more eloquently than I just did!

I mentioned this on another thread today, so it's an excuse to play it here. (Yes, I know it's not Easter. Wink )

@msolga,
I just read your post. I have followed Cohen since 1968. He touches me in a unique way that I can't always put my finger on. It's as though we are commiserating together. His obtuse style sets my mind to working in ways unexpected and wonderful. I have written more than one lyric with his voice in my ear.

@edgarblythe,
I think I understand exactly what you're saying, edgar. That's how I feel, too. (And I just very recently rediscovered him!) He is in a class & also a unique place all his very own. Magic.

I would describe his best songs as "mood perfect". Hitting exactly the right spot he is trying to communicate.

Watching the film I'm Your Man, there was quite a bit of discussion about his song writing craft. Apparently he could take ages, continually changing words, aspects of any particular song, to get it just right .. exactly how he wanted it. I think it shows in his music.

@msolga,
Leonard is quite the existentialist, isn't he? Smile

Could be why he sounds so right again, now?

@msolga,
Inspired to play/post some more Leonard Cohen. Dance Me To the End of Love. Apparently he said this song was inspired by his Jewish ancestry. The Jewish experience. Like Auschwitz.

@msolga,
One of my all time favourites, I remember it hitting the No.1 spot in the hit parades in Europe.

@Dutchy,

I know that as Harry Lime's theme, Dutchy ... from a famous old movie you'd probably know: The Third Man. (I wouldn't mind 20 cents for every time that's had a TV run. Smile ) Orson Wells does his famous "cuckoo clock" speech at the very end of this clip.

Don't mind me, folks.
I'm just indulging myself as I cook & clean up here on Christmas Eve.
I recently rediscovered reggae, courtesy of YouTube, from the dark mists of time. I'd completely forgotten just how cool it was. And still is!

Sold I to the merchant ships ...

Were you ever a "fan" of Mr Marley, Rocky?

Smile (Been singing this all day in my head.)
