Apologies for Spam Emails

My account has been hacked, or something. I am sending out spam for some shopping site that no one should be clicking on. I can't even reply to you, it deletes my message and spams some more. I cleaned caches, ran diagnostics and have a help post in at pcpitstop. Please don't hate me.

The silver lining - been back in touch with some lost friends and have found out which email addresses are defunct (cleaned out my contacts list.......)

Any tips from you techies out there?

@littlek,
Step 1

If it's the a computer that is hacked:

Unplug the computer from the internet and use another computer to ask for help.

If it's a web-mail account that is hacked:

Change the password, security question and alternate email address for the account.

@Robert Gentel,
since I'm here already <cringe>, how do I know if it's only the email and not the computer?

@littlek,
Do you use the email through a browser or through a mail reader like Outlook?

@littlek,
Ok, then it's likely a hacked account. Change the password as soon as you can as well as any way that it can be reset (security question).

You also need to look out for other sites that can be compromised by having been hacked. Other sites where you use this email to register can have their passwords reset and sent to the account, additionally any other site you use this password on should be changed (and this is one good reason not to use the exact same password everywhere).

@Robert Gentel,
Oh christ. At least my money accounts have different passwords! I changed my password for the second time. I dumped caches for a second time. I don't have an alt account for hotmail, though I use hotmail as a an alt account elsewhere. Happily, a2k is a different password (thanks Jes, for that). I'll start going through other accounts.......

Thanks Robert!

@littlek,
If it continues after a change in password let me know, as it could conceivably be malware on your computer (e.g. a keystroke logger sending the passwords out). It's unlikely but a possibility.

@Robert Gentel,
I've looked at the email header: the originating-IP is Chinese (according to "IP Address Locator").

I'll be darned. I got one from Kris_ and didn't check the address till just know. Didn't click on the link, of course.

Gez's address was spamming within the past week, so I wonder if there is a connection. Anyone getting spam from my address?

I don't get the spam, so if anyone could copy the spammer's address and post it here, that'd be great.

It's still happening, Robert.

No responses from pcpitstop - what is the other one - with the military guy as the logo?

@littlek,
Are you sure new emails are being sent (as opposed to the initial attack still being relayed around the net and delivered)?

Have you contacted Hotmail ( [email protected] )?

It's hard to diagnose this remotely, do you have a trusted techie that you can give access to to look into this?

I was feeling unloved, but I found mine filed under Blatham's emails!

@Robert Gentel,
Robert - I looked for a way to contact them for help and didn't find it (typical of me in freak-out mode). Thank you! Message sent.

@dlowan,
Can't imagine it went to Blatham's folder, unless that's what you've named the "spam file".
