"The tale of "Strange Fruit" - its genesis, impact and continuing relevance - is an amazingly complex one that weaves together the lives of African Americans, immigrant Jews, anticommunist government officials, civil rights leaders, radical Leftist teachers and organizers, music publishers, record company executives and jazz musicians. In many ways, the story of the song and its writer and interpreters is as moving and oddly haunting as the song itself."

A remarkable song FY

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world

The breath from your own lips, the touch of fingertips
A sweet and tender kiss
The sound of a midnight train, wearing someone's ring
Someone calling your name
Somebody so warm cradled in your arm
Didn't you think you were worth anything

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world

Millions of us in love, promises made good
Your own flesh and blood
Looking for some truth, dancing with no shoes
The beat, the rhythm, the blues
The pounding of your heart's drum together with another one
Didn't you think anyone loved you

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world

the two songs that come to mind for me are:

Go Rest High On That Mountain by Vince Gill. This song could have been written for my father, who passed away in '02. We played it at the funeral and I can't hear it without thinking of him.

The second is Garth Brooks - If Tomorrow Never Comes, which came out at roughly the same time as my oldest daughter was born. The video reminds me of my daughter and I. It quickly became my favorite and I've sang this song to her a thousand times. As a divorced father who doesn't see his daughters on a daily basis, the song has much significance to me.

Go Rest High On That Mountain

I know your life on earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren't afraid to face the devil
You were no stranger to the rain

Go rest high on that mountain
Son,your work on earth is done
Go to heaven shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son

Oh how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round the grave to grieve
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing

Repeat
(chorus)

Go to heaven a shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son

If Tomorrow Never Comes

Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch her sleeping
She's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark
And a thought crosses my mind
If I never wake up in the morning
Would she ever doubt the way I feel
About her in my heart

(chorus)

If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
She must face this world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes

'Cause I've lost loved ones in my life
Who never knew how much I loved them
Now I live with the regret
That my true feelings for them never were revealed
So I made a promise to myself
To say each day how much she means to me
And avoid that circumstance
Where there's no second chance to tell her how I feel

*chorus*

So tell that someone that you love
Just what you're thinking of
If tomorrow never comes

Two very nice songs. Gill's voice is ethereal and though I don't care for Brooks's voice ,this is a thoughtful song.

This is really strange. One day driving on the highway I heard Eres tu sung by Mocedades. It was sung in Spanish and I didn't even know what it meant. As a matter of fact it was months before I learned the title and months more before I found a recording. But the first time (and since) tears started rolling down my cheeks. Don't know why.

Mocedades - Eres Tu Lyrics

Como una promesa eres t¨², eres t¨²,
como una ma?ana de verano,
como una sonrisa eres t¨², eres t¨²,
as¨ª, as¨ª eres t¨².

Toda mi esperanza eres t¨², eres t¨²,
como lluvia fresca en mis manos,
como fuerte brisa eres t¨², eres t¨²,
as¨ª , as¨ª eres t¨².

as¨ª, as¨ª eres t¨².

Eres t¨² como el agua de mi fuente,
eres t¨² el fuego de mi hogar,
eres t¨² como el agua de mi fuente,
eres t¨² el fuego de mi hogar.

[Translation:]

Like a promise are you, are you.
Like a morning of summer.
Like a smile are you, are you!
Like (that), like (that), are you.

All my hope are you, are you.
Like rain fresh in my hands.
Like strong breeze are you, are you!
Like (that), like (that), are you.

Are you like the water of my fountain.
Are you the fire of my home.
Are you like the water of my fountain.
Are you the fire of my home.

Something like (that) are you, mmmm.
Something like ---- the fire of my hearth.
Something like (that) are you, oooo!

My Life, something like (that) are you.
Like my poem are you, are you.
Like a guitar in the night.
All my horizon are you, are you!

Something like (that) are you, mmmm.
Something like ---- the fire of my hearth.
Something like (that) are you, oooo!
My Life, something like (that) are you.

As some of you may know I love karaoke. There's a song I would love to sing but I can't. Chokes me up every time. It's Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle. It was the favorite song of my beat friend who died of a heart attack four years ago, the same year I was divorced.

Bob Carlisle

Butterfly Kisses Lyrics

There's two things I know for sure
She was sent here from Heaven
And she's daddys little girl
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes
And I thank God for all of the joy in my life
Oh but most of all

For butterlfy kisses after bedtime prayer
Stickin little white flowers all up in her hair
Walk beside the pony dady
It's my first ride
I know the cake looks funny daddy
But i sure tried
Oh with all that I've done wrong
I must have done something right
TO deseve a hug every mornin
And butterfly kisses at night

Sweet 16 today
She's lookin like her mama
A little more every day
One part woman
The other part girl
To perfume and mke up
From ribbons and curls
Trying her wongs out in a great big world
But I remember

Butterlfy kisses after bedtime prayer
Stickin little white flowers all up in her hair
You know how much I love you dady
But if you don't mind
I'm only gonna kiss you on the check this time
Oh with all that I've done wrong
I muct have done something right
To deserve her love every mornin
And butterfly kisses at night

All the precious time
Like the wind the years go by
Precious Butterfly
Spread yuor wings and fly

She'll change her name today
She'll make a promise and I'll give her aways
Standing in the bride room just starin at her
She asked me what I'm thinkin
And I said I'm not sure
I just feel like I'm loosin my baby girl
And she leaned over

And gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there
Stickin little white flowers all up in her hair
Walk me down the isle daddy
It's just about time
Does my wedding gown look pretty daddy?
Daddys don't cry
Oh with all that I've done wrong
I must have done something right
To deserve her love every mornin and butterfly kisses
I couldn't ask GOd for more than this is what love is
I know I've got to let her go but I'll always remember
Every hug in the mornin and butterly kisses

I don't know if somebody listed this song yet.

Tears in heaven by eric clapton.

Listen to that song while thinking of somebody you've lost is sad. If you don't feel like crying listening to this song then you don't got a heart.

I translated this lyrics for my boyfriend a while back. I took some poetic license, so the song would sound better in English, but I didn't change much at all.

"Penelope"
Joan Manuel Serrat

Penelope, with her small brown leather bag,
Her high-heeled shoes, and Sunday dress.
Penelope, she sits on the platform, on the same bench,
And waving about her fan, she waits for the first train.

They say in the town, that a traveler stopped her watch,
Her mind stayed there, on a dull, spring afternoon;
"Good bye my love, do not cry for me please,
I'll be back to you, before the willows have lost their leaves.
Think of me, I'll be back, wait for me"

Poor little girl, it has stopped, the clock in her mind,
Since that gray April day, when her lover left;
In her garden even the last flower has died,
There are no Willows left on Main Street, for Penelope.

Penelope, sad without the strength to wait,
Her eyes, they seem to shine,
If a train sounds in the distance.

Penelope, one by one she sees them go by,
She looks at them, she hears them talk,
To her they are only dolls.

They say in the town, that the traveler came back,
He found her, on the same green bench,
"Oh my darling! Penelope my lover, my peace,
Stop, please stop, weaving dreams in your mind.

Look at me! I'm your love, I've come back."
She smiled at him with her eyes full of yesterday;
It wasn't like that his face nor his hair,
"You are not who I wait for."

And so she stayed, with her small brown leather bag,
Her high-heeled shoes, and Sunday dress, seated at the station,
Waiting for her love.

Penelope!

I agree about go Rest High On That Mountain. It was being played a lot when my uncle died, and it always gets me.

Another one is The River by Garth Brooks. It was played for the funeral of a friend's son. The boy was just 10 when he died. I had a child the same age, and I was a mess throught this funeral.

Amazing Grace, played on the bagpipes gets me too. It just sounds so lovely.

I, too, have been trying to find out the name of this song
Here are more words to the song:

Got no one
Got no one to call my own
You left me sitting (yes you did right now baby)
Alone and blue
All because I'm
Missing you
And I don't know
What to do
Got no one
Got no one to call my own

Have you found out who sung this yet?

I don't remember the group who did this song. Doo wop. Late 50''s/early 60's. Anybody else know this cut?

Remember the DJ Herb Kent, the "Cool Gent"
He played it on Dusty Night.
If there is a website to him, I'm sure he would know. This song has been playing in my head for years!

Songs about Michigan make me cry, because that's my home state.

That includes Michael Smith's, "Panther in Michigan;" Gordon Lightfoot's, "Wreck of the Edmund FitzGerald."
