Oh, boy. An exhibit I'd like to see, and a book I'd like to get my hands on (aside from the book itself, I like Nazreali Press) --

I received an announcement re this show at the Michael Dawson Gallery/Dawson's Book Shop - on the work of Yuichi Hibi.
Dawson's is in the Larchmont area of Los Angeles.

Yuichi Hibi, Untitled from the Neco series, 2006

Yuichi Hibi: Neco
On view between April 2nd and May 9th, 2009
Hours: Thursday through Saturday between 11 am and 5 pm and by appointment.

Michael Dawson Gallery is pleased to host a special exhibition of photographs by contemporary photographer Yuichi Hibi. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, April 2nd through Saturday, May 9th. During the exhibition, the gallery will be open from Thursday through Saturday between 11 am and 5 pm and by appointment.

The exhibition features work from Hibi's latest book, Neco. The title refers to the Japanese word for cat. A 2008 publication from Nazraeli Press, this elaborate artist's book explores the complex role of the cat in Japanese culture as both a symbol of good fortune and calamity. The photographs in Neco, also encourage the viewer to reflect on the joys and perils of human experience. Signed copies of the limited edition book are available for sale.

Hibi's early work dates from the late 1980s when he moved to New York to pursue a career as an actor and filmmaker. His first monograph, Imprint, was published by Nazraeli Press in 2005. This series of quietly intense images, taken in New York and Japan, evoke a sense of longing and isolation as they find order and meaning in overlooked places and things. In 2006, Nazraeli published Hibi's photographic project with Robert Frank titled, A Weekend With Mr. Frank, appearing in the publisher's highly regarded One Picture Book series.

On the book -

Neco
Portland: Nazraeli Press, 2008. A beautifully produced monograph exploring the life of cats and the meaning of existence. Taken over several years, Hibi's rich, grainy photographs of cats at rest, play, and on the hunt capture the very essence of being feline. Numbered edition of 500 copies signed by the photographer. Printed in an oversize format on lush Japanese paper. 15 3/4 x 13 inches, boards, dust jacket.

On Dawson's Book Shop - the book shop history, with some photos, is on the About Dawson's page here - http://www.michaeldawsongallery.com/

Hibi was also featured in a Dec. 20, 2008 article in the NYTimes about his photography in New York at night -
