Poetry Contest -- Ridiculous Scam, but still fun

Almost two years ago I had just bought my computer (first) and I was bored one night when I saw a junk mail about a poetry contest so I sarcastically entered -- though now I can't remember the poem for anything. I just sprayed some nonsense about being alone at my computer and looking for friends online. Well, about 2 months later, after I had completely forgotten about it, I received a letter in the mail from the web site saying they liked my "artistic vision" (I kid you not!) and they asked my permission to publish the poem in their latest coffe table book, so I agreed. The problem was (and yes, I see how stupid I was now -- all criticism is pointless and a waste of bandwisth) that I actually bought a copy of the book -- it's actually an attractive book and the poem is in it, but it's not available to anyone who didn;t buy form that web site. Still even now, I'm receiving invitations to events that would cost me a month's pay, hosted by celebrities, to read the lame little poem in front of unknown numbers of strangers. It would also pay for a trophy-type bowl and a plaque and certificate. Well, I was conned out of some cash, but (though it may be legitimate) I'm not going that far. I just think it's funny that the little piece of nothing I belted out online one bored afternoon back in DC actually went somewhere!

Online poetry submissions are almost always a scam.

This is how it works:

Publish anything submitted. You make money off the people you fool into buying the publication.

The people who buy the publications are... the people who submit the writing.

I read an article about a guy who wrote something like(don't quote me on this): "abcdefhijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnop" He submitted his poem as a joke. A while later he got a letter saying they wanted to publish his artistic talent. He further went on to say that they rarely ever read peoples submissions for the contest, they care only about selling you a book and taking your money. There is nothing wrong with entering the contest, just don't let them hustle you.

Oh yeah, been there done that....when I was in high school, I got duped that way. These days, older and wiser, I have learned two things. Poetry doesn't pay like catering does, and it's much more fun to post it here, amongst the other writers. Smile

Well, now I don't feel like such a dork -- I know I'm not the only one who ever posted. It WAS fun, and the book was way too much. But now at least I can say I am a published writer and poet.

How silly was I as a youngster? I still have my copy of The American Poetry Anthology from that high school experience...5 poems published in it. Guess what that meant....the folks had to pay for 5 books....they were as duped as I was. Sad thing is, I still think my stuff was better than most of the drivel in the supposed 'anthology'. Laughing

That's not silly at all -- I wish I would have kept the things I wrote. And the truth is, my English teachers always asked me to publish most of my assignments in the school's annual collection.

Well, I just had a thought: how much would it aggrivate the previously described site if for some odd reason, they are bombarded with hundreds of entries from different people, but al the same poem -- and everyone gives permission to publish it under all the different names. or maybe just a loosely organized storm of not-really-poems.

and larryta2, it has been almost 2 years since i submitted the peom, and im still being nominated for poet of whatever year it is. but i am happy, since i was snet a fake certificate for poet of merit or somehitng to try to convince me to go to the convention, at least i have the certificate!

Hey, eastree. The same thing happens in public schools. The Who's Who in American secondary education, is just a ploy to get parents to buy the book, and teachers are no exception. Ah, well. follow the money trail, but if it makes a kid or a teacher feel special in some way, I guess it may be worth it.

Some time back, I read a snippet in the paper about a couple of kids leaning a canvas up against a tree, throwing paint at it, then sand. The result was entered in a modern art contest, and it won first place. When the kids were later interviewed, they disclosed all and ended with the observation: "There was no talent involved." Razz
