Can’t remember the title of this fantasy book from the 70s or 80s. It starts with a curmudgeonly old man in his home. There is trouble in the world so he has to leave the comfort of his home to go out and save the world. After all the magical adventures and saving the world, he returns home. The book ends: “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world” Help!

@BumbleBeeBoogie,
Nope, the main character is an old wizard type. (I always thought the title was "World Enough and Time" but that doesn't turn up what I am looking for. ) The old man seems to be a magician and he sets things right out in the world and then, with great relief, returns to his solitary homestead.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated! I have been looking for this for quite a while. As a librarian, it makes me crazy that I can't find it!

best wishes,

@librarian50,
I dont know the name of the book, but I can put you in touch with people who might (for a price...LOL)

Seriously, go here...
http://forums.abebooks.com/abesleuthcom

Enter the synopsis you entered on here, and someone will be able to tell you the name of the book, the author, when it was published, who has it and where you can get it.

I have found several books thru this site.

You aren't talking about the Belgarath character are you? If so look up books by David Eddings and/or his wife.

I don't mean to discourage you, but you have little to go on, other than perhaps the site Mystery Man alluded to. The quote, "God's in his heaven and all's right with the world" is taken from Robert Browning's poem, circa 1840, entitled "Pippa Passes." So that really is no help in finding your book, because it has been quoted again and again by numerous authors in many works in the last 170 years. That leaves you only the vague synopsis you gave. The more you can remember about the story, the better off you will be. I really think Mysterman's suggestion may be your best bet.

@Mulluane,
Thank you, but I'm afraid those are too recent. It was not part of a series, that I am aware...

So we can rule out Andre Norton or J R Tolkien too then I guess. Hmmm. . . .

Not sure if that means you have found that title and it's not the book or if you've not found that title, but here's a book that seems to be the right genre and time frame:

@Robert Gentel,
Hi Robert,
Are you the same Robert who gave me a quarter?

Yes, I have found this title but this is not the book... right time frame though.

I wish I could remember more of what he did out in the world. It was not a holocaust kind of world. Or connected to any kind of time period that I can think of. The old man is more of a main character.

best wishes,
