I give props to the first cave man who, after eating a member of his tribe, stretched their skin taught over their opened skulls, used their leg bones as drumsticks and started the first tribal rhythm band. Small bones like fingers and toes placed in sealed skulls no doubt made great tambourines and other shaker type rhythm instruments.

They laid down a beat and the tribal rapper served up joints like "Smack My Cave Ho Down". Every Monday was open cave night for freestyling.Loser became the buffet and the next raw instrument material.

Now that's effective recycling AND creative musicianship. Cool

I'll go with the "performer" route rather than "composer"...

Paganini - the most famous fiddler, ever

Nina Simone - I just love the way she plays piano so brilliantly while singing

Miles Davis - no one blew his own trumpet so well

Johnny Marr - OK, a bit of an outsider for guitar, but great, if not greatest

Max Roach - Drums (listen to him on Sonny Rollins "Saxaphone Colossus", 1957 - stunning)

BPB, you never fail to crack me up Laughing However, with a few exceptions, such as the isolated Hua of New Guinea, who practiced mortuary cannibalism, cannibalistic tribes tended to eat their enemies, not their own.

Mind you, that still fits into rap culture....so I suppose the model still stands.
