What is the difference between corporations and joint-stock companies? When did joint-stock companies begin & when was their time of greatest use? When was the first (modern?) corporation organized?

@Woollcott,
There's really no difference between corporations and joint stock companies. The latter is more of a British term, as evidenced by the various joint stock companies acts passed by parliament in the nineteenth century.
