What do you like to do on the internet?

I probably spend the bulk of my online time here, mainly reading, but here's the other stuff I do:

Check email, local weather, news (mainly local), three local job sites (hoping to find something better), research and gather info on various things (like product tests), surveys for which I get paid (or entered into a draw), movie times, TV show listings, send letters to the editor for local paper, send photos to be printed, pay my cable bill (credit card).

Those are some of the regular stuff I do. I used to play an online multi-player game, but now that I'm working full time, I just don't have the amount of time it requires, as it's a time sucker.

One thing I've been really hesitant about is to do online banking. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I still don't feel safe about the idea.

How about you? If you would like to be specific, feel free to give links to stuff, if you're so inclined. I'm looking to expand my horizons online.

@husker,
Ah, you're a "Second Lifer". I used to do RuneScape, but it all takes so much time. And then they mess about with designs, etc, and make improvements that they shouldn't. Sad

A young friend got me into one of those multi player role playing games soon after I got on the internet years and years ago, but I didn't have time for it and drifted away after awhile. It was quite absorbing though.

We do the on line banking thing and find it a huge time saver and quite efficient. (We do have one of those identify theft protection services with insurance though.)

I do our taxes with Turbo Tax but file electronically.

I spend some time each day on the email, and since I have a bevy of friends who just love forwarding all that stuff floating around the internet, it takes some time to sort through it. I don't want them to stop because sometimes there is a real jewel in there. I especially enjoy the gorgeous slide shows and power point presentations.

We do most of our shopping on line and love the surf the web just looking at interesting stuff. (Those email also include a lot of really good links.)

We get the local paper in paper form but read the newspapers of other places where we've lived or have special interest. I also check several different news sites now and then just to see what's happening that the newspapers aren't featuring.

I do quite a bit of research on line for writing projects and other purposes.

We both have Pogo memberships and play some on line games now and then.

And a good deal of our work is done on line and that takes up a chunk of our day, but I steal some time here and there to post on A2K and a few other sites.

ditto bear.

I don't idly shop, but I find for things I need on a regular basis, I get a much better deal.

I also research items I'm considering buying.

new to the extent if I see a story I want to know more about, I can dig deeper.

i'm with you on that !
while problems with on-line banking are infrequent , they can be really messy .
business friend of ours had the bank's system crash and had one heck of a time to get the bank to even acknowledge their fault . they eventually made good when he threatened to get the newspaper to publish his story and had his lawyer write a ltter .
as an ordinary customer you'll likely not be given much of a hearing .

we simply don't have that many banking transactions to save much time by on-line banking - 90 % of all purchases go on the credit card and we have an agreement with the bank for automatic withdrawal 17 days after billing - and we even get bonus points - just rec'd $ 80 grocery shopping coupon from the bank just to use their credit card - we like that .

what i do use the computer for :
- news from around the world - i have about 30 newspapers etc. that i'll scan about once a week ,
- correspond with an old friend in germany ,
- a2k ,
- google for all kinds of info ,
- look at vacation/cruise offers - but usually book through travel agent ,
- store pictures .

that's enough for now !

@Reyn,
Write absolute nonsense on A2K.

Check the medical sites to see what dastardly things that the drugs that I am taking can do to me.

Respond, politely as I can, to the people who mail me stupid jokes, unconfirmed rumors, and idiotic petitions.

Get particular joy at relegating inane messages to my "spam" folder. Particularly enjoy hitting the "delete" button.

Check out the news of the day, so that I can increase my paranoia that indeed, chicken little, "the sky is falling".

Obsess over the percentage of red ink that is recently appearing on my financial portfolio.

Check out the material bargains on the net, knowing full well, that I can exist quite nicely with less than 99.9% of the junk.

Attempting to do taxes, when I know full well that Mr. P. will want to do it his way, which is the old fashioned way. Anyone have a tall stool and a green shade?

@Reyn,
I used to play both WoW and Everquest. They can really take over your life. Second Life is quite interesting though I just don't seem to have the time to set myself up in it.

Nowadays I'm a moderator for a site that offers support to people who have some significant problems in their lives. It's nice to take a break from that every once in a while which is why I sought out this message board.

I also do the usual stuff, read the news, check email, and sometimes experience a slight case of tourettes when trying to remember what I want to search for on Google.
