If you mean the goomba, Im afraid that we occasionally see Mullets in South Philly. As far as the chesesteak, I can see that the Roll is inferiro quality and one NEVER places cheese atop the onions/meat and peppers, It is incorporated within the sammich filling. Further, an authentic Philly cheeseteak, uses only CHEEZE WHIZ.

Obviously they didnt watch the preparation of a Pats sammich too closely.

@farmerman,
I thought the commercial was hillarious. But, naturally, Jack in the Box, being a fast food establishment, has to cheapen a good product before mass producing it.
I was kind of good naturedly digging Philadelphians about the portrayal of the citzenry.

dont be ashamed. Philly is composed of some nice people and a whole bunch of thugs. Those silk jackets and "wife beater" tee shirts are considered formal attire in South Philly.

@farmerman,
You don't have to go to South Philly to get a good cheesesteak. You can get one in Roxborough at Delasandro's on Henry Ave and Wendover St, and they are better than what you get at Pat's or Geno's

http://www.openlist.com/philadelphia-pa_dalessandros-steaks/737013881/

And don't piss in your pants chjsa, Roxborough is a white neighborhood, although where a smart mouth like you would likely get dropped on his fat ass in a second by a 14 year-old local girl with her first punch.

btw: farmerman, I worked at Delasandro's while attending college in the 70's and real Philadelphians use mozzarella cheese on cheese steaks. Cheese whiz tastes like plastic.

I will have to give Delasandros a shot. I find that the traditional way for cheesesteaks (with Whiz) isnt my choice either. Im not sure that Muzarrel is my choice either. I like a real cheesey taste so maybe something else. I like a fattier rather than too lean meat, I must have my onions fried, I like hot peppers, I like Heinz catchup, and I like a crusty roll. Sammich cut into threes.

Genos has always been my favorite. Elton John was in the area this week and stopped by.

PS I started at Lasalle. Couldnt take the constant "prayers before organic chemistry".

We go down to Philly alot and Ill be in center city this week, Ill see about getting to Delasandros .

@farmerman,
you can ask them to use provolone. everything you wrote about is available. try their own red sauce, its damned good, but softens the rolls too much for me. a del's cheesesteak was about all i ate at Textile for lunch and dinner.

they are the best cheesesteaks in town. between noon and two pm on the week days you'll see about four philly cop cars aligned in a "west-philly" park, viz., with two tires in the street and two on the curb sitting on the corner of henry and wendover waiting for their cheesesteaks

i went to Philly Textile, '72-'76 about two miles east of del's, lasalle was my number three choice after villanova.

the easiest way to get there from center city is to take east river drive (or kelly drive) up the schuylkill river, get on wissihickon/lincoln drive heading northeast or away from the bridge that takes you to city line ave., turn right at the old police station, on gypsy lane (its about 1/2mile to a mile) then go up the hill until you get to west schoolhouse lane and take a left turn. stay on it until you hit henry ave then take another left onto henry ave. stay on henry ave until you pass the golf course that ends at walnut lane (about 2 miles). dels is two-three short blocks past the golf course on the right hand side of henry ave, sitting on a corner.

enjoy

and their hoagies are very good too!

@edgarblythe,
ive had some good cheesesteaks before, but 95% of the time they are extremely greasey, and the cheese sucks.

@kuvasz,
Thanks. Its neat cause I have to be in Philly on Thurs and I told my colleague that I wanted to try your cheeseteak reccomendation.
I too do not like any house sauces . I want ketchup and not too much. I m ust be able to get the onion, pepper, and cheesey meat taste. Provolone might be good.

I helped set up a "pigments" section in U Dels materials school. We had a few faculty that started out their academics at Textile.

The new hot hoagie source is CApriottis. They have a continuously high end hoagie with the use of hard rolls or soft (depending on your taste). I live in Lancaster County now where a hoagie is made with baloney, american cheese and Pickles . GAAAAgh.
