Cannabis less harmful than drinking, smoking: report

Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, according to a report by a research charity Thursday, which called for a "serious rethink" of drug policy.

The Beckley Foundation, a charity which numbers senior experts and other academics among its advisors, said banning cannabis has no impact on supply and turns users into criminals.

"Although cannabis can have a negative impact on health, including mental health, in terms of relative harms it is considerably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco," says the report by the Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission.

The government is pressing for cannabis to be re-classified in law as a Class B drug compared with its current, less serious, Class C classification.

@Robert Gentel,
Pre reading the article, I've thought that all along - while reading recent articles re the relatively new complexity of mj culture in california (e.g., new yorker, dr. kush article). But mostly it's still smoking, which is still a lung challenge, or am I wrong on that, that it is still smoke involved?

Ok, I'll read it.

@Robert Gentel,
first time i tried smoking - at about age 15 - i got pretty sick and never tried it again .
cannabis : only smelled it across the fence when we had a family with teens living in the house next to us .
they must have thrown some butts over the fence because next year some nice "plants" were growing on our side of the fence . i had no idea what plants were growing along the fence - luckily ehbeth came back from university for a visit and was able to identify them (she was in the environmental studies program and knew all about plants !!! ) .

but i do enjoy a nice drink - no ice please ! - on occasion .

@hamburger,
chuckling about Bethie,

and noting that I have read that the cannabis is able to be made into a butter, and used to prepare desserts and such...

@ossobuco,
To the extent it's not a lung challenge -- brownies, butter, what have you, sounds fine to me. Nothing to chase around about, in any case.

@ossobuco,
My understanding from the latest research I read about here is that it is a nasty lung challenge indeed...but I have no idea where to find that research.

That being said, I think criminalizing dope smokers is silly and harmful.

It's a minor misdemeanour here, like a speeding fine, up to two plants, I think (that goal post changes from time to time as the average plant gets stronger).

this is supposed to be news? This was a proven scientific fact 20 years ago.

@dlowan,
Smoking is better than eating. My girlfriend made some killer pot brownies a few months ago and I was stoned from 3PM to the next morning. A couple of people at our party had to stay the night as driving was impossible. Smoking gives you more control and lets you stop when you want.

@NickFun,
NOTHING beats the hash brownie!!!!

There's kind of a funny/awful story from a few years back.

There's this truly awful chain here, called the Cheesecake Shop...it's everywhere.

Anyhoo, a couple of the "bakers" made a "special" chocolate cake for a friend's party, and stowed it away at the back of the fridges.

Tragically, there was a run on chocolate cakes, and a staff member not in the know sold the special cake.

It must have been damned strong, because a group of poor souls who had no idea what was happening ended up in the ER that night, feeling very odd indeed.

Needless to say, the guys were fired and had some sort of court punishment, too.

@dlowan,
That story reminds me of this video. It's about a cop making a 911 call after he took some pot from evidence and decided to try brownies for the first time:

"I think we're dying.... I think we're dead, I really do. Time is going by really really really really slow."

@Robert Gentel,
HE RANG 911!!!!

What a doofus.

A friend of ours used to do police photography work in Brisbane in the 70's (think somewhere in the deep south in terms of the nature of police).

His dark room doubled as where the drug seizures, then mainly marijuana, were stored.

Now...he was used to the evidence disappearing...(our drug squad in Adelaide was, in druggie-lore, held to be the only one which didn't bust you for the drugs they sold you, but all the squads were known for their consumption and sale of evidence)...but he became surprised at one point because of the untidiness of the thieves. You know, bits of stuff lying around, bags with holes etc.

Then, the thieves became either too stoned, or too habituated, to bother hiding.

Yes.....the happiest family of mice ever known to humankind had found paradise.

He said they became, of course, fascinated by what he was doing...and would sit circling his work bench, swaying bemusedly, watching everything he did with the rapt, ridiculous, attention of the truly stoned......

I'm not intolerant of pot smoking. Just its abuse, as with alcohol. When I worked construction a number of years back, I sometimes ended up working with pot smokers who had no self control during working hours. One guy I worked for, and his buddy, took twenty minute pot breaks for each fifteen minutes worked. I only lasted a day or two around them.
