@Miller,
from miller's post :
Quote:...I'm a little worried we may look back on the prostate cancer screening era, after we learn results of clinical trials, and see that we've harmed a lot of people without doing them good,"
several years ago my family doctor made an appointment for me at our university hospital to have a little "male problem" checked out .
the senior intern with whom the examination had been scheduled was unavailable - had to assist in op room .
a nurse asked me if i cared to see one of the juniors - "sure" , i said .
when speaking to the junior , i proudly reported that i had an annual prostate examinaton done .
"you are over 70 , best stop it " , he said .
i argued a bit , also saying that it only cost $20 .
"take your wife to lunch for the $20 . at your age you probably already have a slowly growing prostate problem - best NOT to disturb it . if it's slow growing you'll die from some other cause , if it's rapidly growing , we won't be able to do much for you " .
cheered me up enormously and the $20 now buy two breakfasts .
my family doctor actually agreed .
