Hi all - I would appreciate any help with the last few clues in this months cryptic.
9d - delivers TV receivers for nothing - 4 & 4 - I thought it might be free view but the first letter I have is an S which comes from 5a chronicles (inch closer to historical journals)
13a - fixed on the double - ?a??
47a - reluctant to join in mass hysteria - ?n?
20a - gets stuck in chalets - l?o?e?
Any ideas anyone?
in anticipation, thanks

giant cryptic colossus 199
Hello verso,

I don't understand the colossus number as my last colossus is 116 but I will help where I can.

At 47A SHY. IN being the clue word. masS HYsteria.
20A LODGES. Same meaning for stuck and chalets.

Will have to think on the other two.
Canoe.

Hello again verso,

Do you have any other letters, or possibles, for 9d?

At 13A I want to say the answer is FAST. If a thing is fixed in position it is held fast, and on the double means fast. Without being able to see the crossword I find it hard. I have no idea how Francis is as accurate as he is and as often as he is. He is remarkable.

Hope this has been of some help.

Canoe.

Thank you for your kind words, Canoe!

The answer is: years of practice.

I did this puzzles for years and I think I have a special predisposition for word plays, spoonerisms, acronyms and so on.

Even though it's not easy for me to do this in English, the general rules are the same as in French.

So I translate your clues, find the answer in French, then look for which word fits your letters in English..

That's it!

still on giant cryptic 199
Hi friends thanks for the help with the clues. However I just have one more left, 29 d which says undeniably depressed? Not wrong! and if shy is correct this makes 29d a nine letter word, ?c??r??h?
Any ideas?
