Just check 23 across did you get sit (other possibilities are set or sat)? But I thinks it's must be rearranged. Agree?

Yes, I love the cryptics too. As with you, it just took sheer perserverence but am now addicted.
At 23a I have sit but at 40a I have ace. All I have is my copy of the answers, the book with the clues has been given away so am unable to recheck my answer. Hopefully someone else can help with that one.
