I would think an elaborate sweet cake would be a TORTE.

Sorry, I don't get these puzzles so I don't know what all your working with in across and down but I always like to help out a crossword lover when I can.

I pulled up a map of Libya but I don't see anything that would fit.

I'm sure someone will come along who knows!

The "Desert Rats" were the 7th Armoured Division of the British Army, not to be confused with the 8th Army or any regiments. The 7th Armoured were the first to enter the desert war against the Italians in 1941, where they soon earned the nickname "desert rats". The 7th Armoured participated in the invasion of Italy, but were then withdrawn and sent to NW Europe instead a month after D-Day. It was there that the red jerboa (desert rat) first started to appear in the white circle of the formation sign. Shortly afterwards, the sign was changed to a red jerboa outlined in white on a black rectangle.

Hi Farkha, thanks for your input, but I was talking about the Aussie Diggers, known as the "Rats of Tobruk". Smile

Spent some time in Libya between 62 - 64. Visited many battle sites and grave yards in the Toburk and Benghazi areas. Sad to see the headstones of so many young men from all corners of The Empire.
I did not know the moniker of the Australian Diggers of Toburk. Thanks for 'wisening me up'. Cheers.
