Hi Lezzles

The answer I have is "CHUG".

Like a steam engine chugging.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Dutchy, that's what I originally thought. However, I thought there might be a technical word I was unaware of, so I checked it out and all references in dictionaries are to the NOISE of a engine, not the action of the engine labouring uphill.
-----------------------------------------
chug
1. a short, dull, explosive sound: the steady chug of an engine. - noun
2. to make this sound: The motor chugged. - verb (used without object)
3. to move while making this sound: The train chugged along.
-----------------------------------------
I think I'll put it down to being one of Christine's more obscure clues and go with the flow. Laughing

My spell checker gives only 3 possible words for ?hug, namely, Chug. Shug and Thug. Discount the latter two and you have only 'CHUG' left.
Discussed this clue also with another Lovatts enthusiast and s
he came up with the same answer.
