I'm helping my 4th grader with this problem but can't seem to work it out. Please help!
At a concession stand, Luis bought a drink for $0.75, a hot dog for $1.25, and 3 bags of peanuts for $0.30 each. She received $2.10 in change. How much money did he start with?
let's see... complicated, but you could try:
0.75 + 1.25 + 0.30 + 0.30 + 0.30 + 2.10
Hinge, You are smarter than a 4th grader.
Some people arn't you know.
Apologies for any offence caused. It's my little rule not to give the answer if you can show the calculation. Many people want to know how to get the answer as much as they want the answer - well I do anyway. We quite often get students asking their homework questions and I have apparently mistaken this for one of those. I'll just get back on my horse and ride west.

This is hard???
0.75
1.25
0.90 +
-------
2.90
-------
To get $2.10 in change for $2.90 worth of purchases, you have to offer $5.00
Were do you live that has no sales tax on soda pop?
Rap
Besides, the question is 'what did he start with' he paid with a $5 bill but he might have had a million in small unmarked bills and a gold amex card.
Or the cashier might have been inumerate and given the wrong change.

However if the cashier was not illiterate they would know that "innumerate" has two 'n's.

The casual observer might/may notice that the question is inexplicable.

That happens to me all the time when I'm out with the wife. I pay she gets the change.

And if they were paying attention they would have noticed that the change had already been given by two other cashiers!

Don't foist your gender stereotypes on us you fascist - the purchaser might have been transsexual or a hermaphrodite with multiple personality disorder.
Perhaps the woman payed for her sex change in cash, and was given his/her change afterwards when she was a he.
This looks like a money laundering operation.
