I can't argue the correctness of your statement above. It's just that, I was under the impression, being far from redneck regions, wealthier rednecks may be land rich, but cash poor? That would be because to work the land that's owned, the bank has to be repaid a loan?

But are most people, that would be true rednecks, proud of that moniker?

The rednecks I know wouldn't want to be anything else, foofie. And, no, it's not about money (cash or otherwise) so much as it's about outlook. I've yet to meet a liberal redneck.

And, yet, all conservatives are not rednecks. It's a persona as well as an outlook. Mame's descriptions were good, as were some of the others. I grew up in a family of rednecks. My brother can still make me seethe with some of the stuff he comes up with. He knows he'll get it back in full force from me when he spouts his 'crap'. I think he looks forward to the exchanges.

This has been done to death here before, hasn't it???

I recall some thread/s hashing out the history of the moniker, and heated debate re its use.

Lash enjoyed herself quite a lot as I recall by saying that nasty libruls used it and it was as bad as saying "nigger" and what hypocritical arseholes the left were on that basis, or something like that.

I wouldn't be altogether sure about Randy's song having no irony you know.

The language changes.

I am sure redneck has an honourable history, and I do not consider being a working class person to imply that one is a bigot, however I think the reality of the term as used today does imply this. Doubtless it should not imply this, and there is doubtless a good argument for not using it as a derogatory term, because of its history.

I never had any idea of the term's derivation until I read it in one of the arguments here. I thought it had been coined as a term meaning ignorant bigot....perhaps because an angry person's neck turns red as well as their face....or that it implied having the aspect of a turkey gobbler...red and constantly gabbling!!!
