* Acids taste sour, are corrosive to metals, change litmus (a dye extracted from lichens) red, and become less acidic when mixed with bases.
* Bases feel slippery, change litmus blue, and become less basic when mixed with acids.

introduction to Acids and Bases

Are all bases naturally alkaline?

Battery acid. The liquid thats in a car battery. If you put it on metal it will eat the metal.

Now, take your jar of battery acid and pour it in a bucketful of water. will it still eat the metal?

Is the water acid or alkaline

You can buy a test kit at any good hardware or garden center for testing to see if something is acid or alkaline. Probable cost $5.00. You might learn quicker by reading the text and doing a few experiments.

i just dont understand why it happens. i mean i know it, i cant understand it, im not very good with numerals and this is chemistry.

i understand how it happens, i dont know why.

why do the ions split off? why is it the first element ions that do it? salt and water?

i think i should just take my time and start from the ground up with chemistry basics, i never took that class.

Its to do with the number of electrons and protons in each individual atom.

Thats about as far as my high school chemistry can take me.

someon else will be along in good time i'm sure.

What do you mean, basically? If you react an acid with a base, the reaction cancels out itself, leaving water and a salt as the products. Such a reaction is called neutralization reaction.

For example:

HCl + NaOH = NaCl + H2O
HCl- acid
NaOH- base
NaCl- salt
H2O -- you know that, don't ya?

Roger:

Thanks for asking! I was taking tests. I should be able to come on here more often now! Hope you are okay.
