Pimp Mo's iPod!

Reply Thu 14 Feb, 2008 01:18 pm
Mo got a new iPod to help him with his rock school drumming lessons and I've finally figured out how to program it so now I need some help in a selecting some songs for his playlist.

I have started with some of his favorites (with a nod towards BiPolar Bear for sending us to much of this) that we already had on CD:

White Zombie -- More Human than Human
AC/DC -- You Shook Me All Night Long
Arrowsmith -- Walk This Way
Johnny Cash -- Ring of Fire
The Ramones -- I Wanna Be Sedated and I'm Against It
The Clash -- Clampdown, Brand New Cadillac and Hateful
Nazereth -- Hair of the Dog
Black Sabbath -- Iron Man
Great White -- Once Bitten Twice Shy
Quiet Riot -- Bang Your Head
Queen -- We Will Rock You

Based on this list of his favorite songs, what else should I consider adding.

Thanks!

Dag just mentioned Gogol Bordello on another thread, and although they are not core rock, I think Mo (and you) might appreciate their sense of humor and wild gypsy fusion:

Gogol Bordello description

You can probably find a music link fairly easily.

Hey Boom, I will pop back when I get home. I tried three times to post, but the consumers are not cooperating.

You're missing your Raggae!!! Most little kids loooooove Raggae because it's easy to bounce to and dance to. Start with Marley.

The existing list brings to my mind the following artists:

David Bowie
The Dirtbombs
The Exploding Hearts (highly recommended)
The Hollywood Brats
Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers
MC5
Nirvana

And any aspiring drummer needs a healthy dose of Zeppelin.

And what the hell, let's throw in the Who and the Kinks. And the Pixies.

Boomer, just make sure you set the volume control so he can't blow his eardrums out. (Yes mother.)

Then try Desmond Dekker. And maybe the Abyssinians.

Gargamel read my mind. I was just about to add Zeppelin for a budding drummer.

I have tried to get the little fart into reggae but so far he hasn't bit. It is all about rock right now with a smidgen of country (see Johnny Cash). I might add some more of the Ramones more country type songs to the mix just for kicks.

Zepplin does need to be on there. Mr. B is more familiar with them so I'll let him choose the songs.

The Who would probably work.

He doesn't get the Kinks or the Beatles yet. <sigh>

Or Nirvana. <sigh>

He even rejects most punk. <sigh sigh>

I'm familiar with some of those bands Gargamel but not at all with others. I'll check them out. Are there certain songs I should gravitate too.

He does like soul/funk ala James Brown which I haven't added any of yet. "I Feel Good" definately needs to be on his playlist as that is our number one dance party song.

We are watching the volume control and he does wear ear protection when playing his drums. But he does like his music loud. We're trying to be careful.

Ok, Boom. Zep has now been covered, kudos to Garg, and eoe.

I think a young drummer would like some Rush. Tom Sawyer, or maybe Trees, or if he likes it harder, Working Man.

INXS also had some serious drums, I'd hafta look to give you a title he might relate to.

I'll stop back in...

Be sure to grab the Godfather's cut called "The Funky Drummer".
Oh yeah. You know how much he loved to 'give the drummer some"!

eoe + Gargamel for Valentines day this year!

Funky Drummer is an excellent suggestion. As is Honky Tonk Women.

Mo is a pretty cool little dude, in my book anyway. In other books he's a bit of an oddball. Music is something he really likes and he has definate preference about that are independant of me or Mr. B and certainly independant of the rest of the first graders. We all get a bit of criticism for what he listens to (what we allow him to listen to) but he has learned to kind of keep his likes to himself. Luckily we recently found a music school for "oddball" kids and it is nice to see him so excited about it.

He comes across songs he likes pretty organically (note to self: add Lunatic Fringe to playlist) by hearing them and wanting to hear them again and again (and again and again and again) despite my insistence that I don't own the radio stations and most people don't want to hear the same song fifteen times in a row.

I should say.... "Don't get me started..." regarding Mo. He is tied for my favorite person.

Honky Tonk Women makes me think of Wilco's "Casino Queen" -- I might have to revisit some old Wilco stuff......

That reminded me of an old disc jockey in Chicago, Herb Kent the Cool Gent, who would do just that, play one song over and over and over again. He called it "putting it on the 10-9" (which I never got) and I can still remember how much he loved "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time" and how he would play it again and again.
