Analogue cordless phone-handset

I have an analogue cordless phone , the base station charge lights are working as is the base station ring tone but the handset itself is "dead" no ringtone/dialtone or anything - what is wrong ?

dead battery

Phone batteries tend to lose the ability to hold a charge over time. You might be able to find a replacement battery since many are available.
