Pretty easy idea - name a song that has a title not used in the lyrics.
As a starting point:
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
I have a feeling that songs with words like Ode, Blues, Song or Letter in them will be over-represented. Like:
Epistle To Dippy - Donovan
Letter to Hermione - David Bowie
Pop Song 89 - REM
Big mouth blues - Gram Parsons
And of course, instrumentals are right out....
Theme for an imaginary western - Jack Bruce
Theme from Shaft - Isaac Hayes
Girlwatcher's theme - Andy Williams ?
Lara's theme - Dr. Zhivago soundtrack
i think any number of Bob Dylan tunes qualify; here'a a handful that come to mind; Dylan devotees can do much better i'm sure.
Ballad of a thin man
Subterranean homesick blues
Positively 4th street
Live minus zero/no limit
My back pages
She belongs to me
Rainy day women #12 and 35
Hi Yit
I'd forgotten about 'theme'. At least Shaft does have the lyric 'shaft'.
Dylan does look to be the king of this - no surprise I guess.
Although I've got two more Bowie tracks:
Width of a circle
&
Cygnet committee
Surfing With A Spoon - Midnight Oil
The Loved One - The Loved Ones(famously covered by INXS)
The Unloved One - Inxs (largely instrumental I guess)
Dreams of Leaving - Human League
The order of death - Public Image
Chant No. 1 - Spandau Ballet
Train in vain - Clash
and, for a massive change of pace
Annie's Song - John Denver
Epistle to Dippy
The Fat Angel
Celeste
Mad John's Escape
Donovan
Ballad of the Green Beret
Barry Sadler
Sukiaki
Kyu Sakamoto
For What It's Worth
Buffalo Springfield
Led Zeppelin does this a lot.
Misty Mountain Hop
The Crunge
Four Sticks
Kashmir
The Christmas Song
Mel Torme

Except the word Kashmir does eventually make an appearance - man I love that track.
Street Hassle - Lou Reed
Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order (and Frente)

Had to listen to the song again, forgot about that.
The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove ~ Dead Can Dance
possibly one of the strangest song titles out there, then again they are Australian

Not so much a song title as a description of the noise you hear.
What Godzilla Said To God When His Name Wasn't Found In The Book Of Life - American Music Club
Smut - Skyhooks
Slip into a cinema and give yourself a treat
Better take a raincoat could be sticky on the seat
Open up you Twisties and open up your fly
Pictures start to flicker as your hand moves down your thigh
If your mother knew what you were doing
She'd probably hang her head and cry
And if she thought that you were whipping the dripping
She'd give you a belt, extract all the teeth of your fly
Munchy Munchy Twisties the shorts are such a drag
Make a little opening in the other end of your bag
Now put your Twisties right down there in your lap
No-one ever guesses whatsit's in the pack
If your mother knew what you were doing...etc.
Ooh la la la la la la la la...etc.
Better get a grip on yourself
You better pull yourself together..
Picture's almost over but still your not quite there
John Wayne pulls his gun out and you wish he'd some to spare
Then they turn the lights on and people start to stare
You find you've got a boot full and your coat's stuck to the chair
If your mother knew what you were doing...etc.
Ooh la la la la la la la la...etc.
