My dad (85) has been trying to find a poem he remembers from his (Ontario) childhood, part of which goes "To shoot, to shoot, would be my delight, To shoot the dogs that howl in the night." Any ideas?
Thanks, mab3803
I dunno but I know where you can find some MP3 coyote calls....
Dunno either, but am one of those people who sent good money to the organization that brought back the wolves to Yellowstone........
Mab - just remembered those darling wolves now populating our Yellowstone were donated by Canada, so here's a present for your dad:
Quote:A Shooting Song by WB Rands. "To shoot, to shoot, would be my delight,
To shoot the cuts that howl in the night ; To shoot the lion, the wolf, ...
The poem appears in a poetry collection by E.V. Lucas entitled "A Book of Verses for Children" on page 174. You can order it from any bookstore.
You mean the wolves that have now spread too far, well outside of the park, and are about to be "managed" once again?
Unmanaged animal resources are never a good idea.
It sounds like something Charles Bukowski would right. Was it an American poet?
Mab - the link for your dad follows:

Quote:... to shoot the cats that howl in the night...
Amigo - no, the poet was a Brit, and seems to have objected to howling cats, not dogs
How about that!! My dad (quite the cat lover) obviously modified his memory to suit his preference! Thank you - he will be thrilled.
Hooray!
HighSeas - you've managed to prove A2K rocks to my best friend from high school!
Mab does sound like a wonderful person ehBeth; hope she stays around.
Looking over the stanza, and the bit about shooting out in the square, I think it is the other cat lover (me) who remembered the line wrong. (I might have known it would not be my dad's error!) I've ordered a copy of the book as an early father's day present.
