I feel so ignorant.
Ignorant, yes. Unintelligent? Not sufficient evidence.
When cable television began to be a big industry in the United States more than 20 years ago, one of the early entrants as a "provider of cable content" was Home Box Office--HBO. They began by showing motion pictures without commercial interruption (that didn't last long), and made a name and a place in the market by showing uncensored motion pictures. Later, they got in the game of providing "made for television" documentaries and dramatic series of their own. HBO has been particularly successful at making these dramatic series, which are then often picked up by other networks. For example, HBO made a series about the Roman Empire, based on actual fiction, and entitled, unsurprisingly,
Rome. The History Channel has now picked up
Rome, and will begin airing it in North America next week. HBO makes a lot of money.
