Concern over happiness of toilet worms

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The New Zealand inventor of
a worm-powered composting toilet said the project was nearly flushed
over concerns about the psychological state of the worms.
Coll Bell, inventor of the "wormorator," said an Auckland Regional Council
staff member ordered him to have an expert report on the toilet's
psychological impact on the worms after she observed the project during
a site visit, The (Auckland) Sunday Star-Times reported Tuesday.
The wormorator employs a colony of tiger worms to filter solids out of
toilet waste that is then filtered and sent to underground trenches.
"She felt that the worms were being unfairly treated, being expected to
deal with human feces, and that it could affect them in a psychological
way," Bell said.
He said the council was satiated when vermiculture consultant Patricia
Naidu observed the worms and declared they were living and breeding
healthily.
