From the late Middle Ages through the Enlightenment and some time after, mathematics was increasingly seen as a way to describe natural phenomenon precisely. Indeed, even through the end of the 19th century, the universe was seen as mechanical; all of the observed, complex motion and forces seen in nature were thought to be deterministic. How does the modern, scientific world view differ?
