Neil Diamond has revealed that the Sweet Caroline is about Caroline Kennedy.
He did not reveal this "secret" as he thought maybe he would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday.
He got his chance last week when he performed the song via satellite at Caroline Kennedy's 50th birthday party.
Diamond was a "young, broke songwriter" when a photo of the president's daughter in a news magazine caught his eye.
"It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony," Diamond recalled. "It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there."
Opportunistic so and so.
Do you remember the words?
Every Red Sox fan knows the words:
Where it began
I cant begin to knowin
But then I know its growin strong
Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Whod have believed youd come along
Hands, touchin hands
Reachin out
Touchin me
Touchin you
Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Ive been inclined
To believe they never would
But now i
Look at the night
And it dont seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurtin runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when Im with you
Warm, touchin warm
Reachin out
Touchin me
Touchin me
Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Ive been inclined
To believe they never would
Oh, no, no
Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Ive been inclined
I believed they never could
Sweet caroline
Brings a tear to my eye.
I wonder what she thought about it all. How old is Neil Diamond now, that song is a few years ago.
What a great story
For those that want to hear the song:

The words are a little different than what you posted
He is one of my favorite singers. I have seen him in concert a few times.

That's odd - I got it off a lyrics website (just to make sure I got all words right).
Here is another version but, the words are still different.

Actually, it doesn't matter, close enough.
I didn't know the story behind that song until you posted it. I probably never would have known unless you posted it. I still think it is a great song btw
That is adorable! I always wondered who the song was about.
Neil Diamond's version is okay. I guess. But the BEST versions are unquestionably at Fenway Park. You gotta have the pointing, and the "oh, oh, oh"s and the "So Good, So Good, So Good". They're what really make the song. Try the YouTube clips at Fenway for the real flavor of the song. Of course, Red Sox fans are usually too beered up to stay on key, but you have to get beyond that to the emotion. My favorite is the girl (who actually stays in tune) who sings it to Jason Varitek, who was on the far side of the field at the time. She's convinced he heard her out of the 30,000 singing, and waved. Not that's a true fan.
umm, it really pains me to admit this, but judging from that clip Mets fans are better singers than Sox fans, johnny-come-latelies to the song tho they be.
If you want to hear my daughters sing this song here is the link:

Scroll down a bit and listen to "Another duet with two young Sox fans"

Thanks - I think so. When they heard we could call up and sing and then get on the internet - they just had to do it. The younger one didn't know most of the words so she just sort of mumbled along.
I figured that about the younger one. The thing is she tried. I bet they were thrilled to listen to themselves on the net.
