Tricky DEMON clue

HELP!!! I cant find an answer for 107 across in THE DEMON "NOV Issue" The clue is "animal yoke part" I have o?b?t. The only word that would fit is orbit.
I have been to every thesaurus on the net, every dictionary on the net plus 4 dictionaries of my own and googled it and can not find the word orbit relating to an animal yoke anywhere.
ps. I guessed the answer to 112 down "raft" but looked it up also.

Could it be "oxbit" - like the bit that fits in an animals mouth attached to reins for steering?

Yokes were ususally put on oxen. I have no idea if they used a bit or not. I don't think "oxbit" is a real word.

Still, oxbit fits, soooo......

Thanks so much. Duh - brain me had apes instead of aped. Yes the oxbow is the U shaped bit of wood that fits under and around the neck of the ox and is connected to the bar at the top.
