How Much Are You Involved in the Newer Consumer Electronics?

Reply Sun 4 Nov, 2007 06:16 am
In the last decade, the proliferation of all sorts of consumer electronics have dominated the buying habits of people. I have been very curious as to just how deeply each person has gotten on the electronics bandwagon.

Out of nothing but my deep curiosity I would be interested in knowing:

Your age: You don't have to be exact. Just a general idea.

Do you have?

HDTV- LCD or plasma?

Personal music player.......What kind?

More than one computer? Desktop or laptop? How much do you use your computer?

Broadband connection or dialup? What kind?

Satellite radio? In car or home model?

GPS- In car or portable?

Portable DVD player?

Regular DVD Player- Standard or Hi-def?

PDA, Blackberry, etc.?

cellphone?

Digital Camera- Point and shoot, or SLR? How many megapixels?

Anything else that I have forgotten?

I am really curious if there is any correllation between a person's age, and level of involvement with the newer types of electronic equipment.

I have everything except HDTV and an In-car GPS. I do have a plotting GPS and radar/sonar on the boat and a surveying GPS. I use an iPod Docking station by Bose. I can download books and play em with great sound.

My cellphone only calls , recieves and stores messages. I dont text, nor do I take pix with my cell phone (Digital cameras are getting way too good to screw with a phone as camera)

I have a real time digital tipping rain gage out in the fields. I have to drive out and look at it when it rains. It stores data in 15 min chunks , so I can flash cube it , or just read it at the station on a digital readout. I need a solar power module
we use awireless router on a cable high speed.
I use a lot of soil moisture and Ph gages in the fields.

Gonna be 58 around Christmas

I wanna get a WIFI radio that pulls in radio stations from all over the world but I dont know anything about specific brands

AND we have a toaster that never burns your toast.

I'm 40, and I love gadgets!
Portable GPS, cellphone, 5.1 DVD home cinema, normal TV-set(!), iPod, iMac with 160GB external drive for music and pictures, 5megapixel point-and-shoot camera, change my cellphone every 18 months when my plan allows me to, I listen to radio over my 'puter, and soon watch TV over IP, I do skype with relatives back home in Sweden.

That's all, I think.

I'm curious whether CD contents can be copied onto tape via a Walkman cassette recorder. That will be my afternoon project, I think.

Maybe I'll take a picture of this setup with my digital camera, while chatting about it on my cell phone. Later on I may try disconnecting my CD player from my old-fashioned hi-fi and attaching it to my old-fashioned TV to see if it works. So far I haven't been able to get any sound out of it with the hi-fi.

Anyway, I lied! My CD player also plays DVDs and MP3s - but I don't know if I'll get a peep out of them, either. I can't decide whether this gadget is defective or if I'm the defective one. The hi-fi used to play and record tapes very nicely, but I can't seem to get the hang of the CD player's audio feature - haven't tried to watch a movie yet; all my films are on video cassette.

Hi Phoenix,

I'm hardly involved in the new consumer electronics. In some cases we do have multiple pieces of equipment because of the job I used to have - we had a household set up in the States, and another household overseas.

I'm 51.

We do not have an HDTV, but we do have two regular sets.

I bought a SanDisk 2 Gig MP3 player earlier this year, but wish I had done it years earlier. I spent about ten hours a week travelling with my old job. After buying the MP3 player I put language lessons on it, and there's an outfit in Virginia that sells university lectures on CD. I bought several of these and put them on the MP3 player as well. I never really wasted those ten hours before, because I always had a book to read. But the time was just used so much more effectively with the MP3 player.

I think we have five PCs in the house. Two are obsolete ones the kids left behind when they went off to school, and two are obsolete ones we had from years ago. The last one was my 15 year service award from work that's fairly up to date.

We have DSL service through our phone company.

We do not subscribe to either of the satellite radio outfits. But our satellite TV provider does have music channels available.

No GPS.

No portable DVD.

We have four DVD players, but only use the most recent. When we were overseas we finally had to buy a multi-system multi-region unit. It came with a 160 gig hard drive. Initially I couldn't think of how a HD could come in handy. It was just a few days before I didn't want to live without it.

No PDA. A piece of paper in my pocket works just fine.

Every other member in our family has a cell phone. I absolutely refuse to own one. If anything, its even worse where I used to work overseas. It seems that everyone there has a cell phone surgically attached to their ear, and they scream into it 24/7....in libraries...on busses at 0445 when any sane person is trying to sleep...you get the idea. I found an outfit in England on the internet that sells something that looks like a cell phone but is really a cell phone jammer. They cost the equivalent of about $400 (it would have been worth it) but the real problem is that the bands they use where we lived overseas are different than the bands used in the US. Combine that with early retirement immenently looming, and I didn't order it. But it would have been so much fun to have used.

We did buy a digital camera early this year. Cannon 10 megapixel.

So. Jim - how do you transfer material from CDs to MP3 player?

The exact steps will depend on the software that comes with the MP3 player.

Download the tracts from the CD onto your computer hard drive using Windows Media Player (or similar software). Then follow the instructions that come with your MP3 player - it will probably be similar to "dragging" the file onto a flash drive.

So the computer is needed for intermediary function?

I assume that would give a cleaner recording than CD player direct to Walkman recorder; there is a bit of background buzz with that, though not enough to annoy - I think.

Also, some CDs can be played on the computer, but not copied to it.

I use my cassette Walkman when I work out, and when I walk. Problem is, that most of the tapes that I have with a heavy beat are starting to fall apart, and I can't replace them.

I have considered getting an mp3 player, or an Ipod, but I really don't feel like downloading music. I really want to pop something into a player, and go!

Personal music player.......What kind? I have an old Archos Jukebox (Pre ipod harddrive mp3 player.) Use it in the car on long trips

More than one computer? Desktop or laptop? How much do you use your computer? Piles of them. Use some of them a lot. Some of them hold down the piles of other stuff.

Broadband connection or dialup? What kind? Cable modem

Satellite radio? In car or home model? No

GPS- In car or portable? Just bought one for my PDA. I got it working yesterday.

Portable DVD player? No

Regular DVD Player- Standard or Hi-def?

PDA, Blackberry, etc.? Yes

cellphone?Yes

Digital Camera- Point and shoot, or SLR? How many megapixels? Yes. point and shoot but also takes video. 5mp

Anything else that I have forgotten? DVR. My wife was convinced she was going to hate the ReplayTV when I got one. We have 2 now. Networked and can stream shows from one to the other.

OK, Phoenix, you can add one MP3 player (iClix) that so totally frustrated me that I put it away and forgot about it altogether for several months. Because of your questionnaire, I dug it out and am trying to figure how to get it functioning. So far I've got the FM working...
