I've owned 4 pet rats-2 have died of old age and 2 have had tumors that lead to their death.
One of them belonged to my friend who had to give her up when she moved. The rat was fine when it first came- I did everything exactly the same as my friend, yet the rat developed a tumor within a couple months.
Does anyone know if the tumors develop from their surroundings, or is it a gene the rat carries that is uncontrollable?
Just guessing, but I bet there is a pretty strong genetic predisposition.
There's a reason that rats are used to test carcinogens - they are extremely genetically predisposed to tumor formation. To a rat, old age and tumors are pretty much the same thing.
