Making a little light panel run by a battery.....

I want to make a little deal for Mo's halloween costume. I envision it as a little panel with maybe two rows of lights; the whole thing being no bigger than 8x4 inches.

I'm thinking I could take a piece of cardboard, punch holes in it, run the lights through it (something small kind of like christmas light type things) and run a wire into a backpack that would hold the battery.

Ideally the lights would flash randomly.

In the best of all possible worlds, I could buy everything I need at radio shack.

In fantasy-land it could be assembled by a monkey because I'm not much better at this kind of stuff than a monkey would be.

Honestly, even something like a rope light that I could rig to run off a battery rather than electricity would be pretty cool.

Anybody?

Thanks a million!

"Battery powered outlet" seems to get useful Google results -- here's a sample:

Convert Christmas lights to run from batteries: http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/dc-christmas-lights.html

Or buy them retail: http://www.christmaslightsetc.com/categorydetail.asp?CategoryID=1

Music To Light Modulator
3 groups of 6 high brightness LEDS each respond to "lows", "midranges" and "high" audio frequencies. Produces a real neat effect.

OK, I know that you said that a monkey would probably be just as good as you at doing this type of thing, however, I think this may help you. It comes with everything you need and also instructions. When I was in school our teacher had us order things from this company and the kits are pretty simple. You do have to do some soldering but that's not that hard.

If you order two of these it should do exactly what you want it to do.
