@fbaezer,
fbaezer, that is an informative post that I've copied into my"Books I Want to Read" file. I don't think I've read any of his work although I've read a good deal about him. I'll start with Los Cachorros...

five hours into listening to The Passage (almost 40 hours), pretty good so far, in my opinion better than The Stand so far

a bout 3/4 of the way through the book, still loving it, if you're a fan of post apocalyptic stories like The Stand, this is likely the book for you, some reviews call it a vampire book, but i don't really see it that way, the virus that infects folks does turn them into vampire like creatures but it's more of a government experiment gone wrong

@fbaezer,
fbaezer, I found a used copy of Los Cachorros for a few bucks on Amazon. No new copies available, reflecting the new interest from the Nobel. Thanks for the long and useful post that inspired me.

An hour into the audible book, The Mote in God's Eye by [i[Larry Niven[/i] and Jerry Pournelle. This classic sci-fi adventure was a recommendation by Leo Laporte, the charismatic tech guru of San Francisco.

@JPB,
I got 7/8 of the way through the Poisonwood Bible and put the book down....couldn't read any more.

That was a while back. Maybe I'll revisit....

@Kara,
I felt that way about Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. It felt so high handed. I've loved several of her books, though. Poisonwood Bible was a favorite. I also loved the Turtle books.

I am reading too many books at once right now. Have about 20 pages left of The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. Actually I found the best way to go forward was to begin this tough read all over again.

Now, I've just begun Freedom by Jonathan Franzen. It's about, pretty much, everybody's family at some point (sometimes horrifying). Difficult to stop reading it, now. In my spare time I read some pages of A Course in Miracles. Intriguing information in that 1,000 page book, from which I've read about 50 pages.

Just finished "The Passage." by Justin Cronin.

Not sure how I feel about it.

On one level I feel very sad and depressed.

On another, I feel cheated that I didn't expect this to be a first in a series.

On another I feel good to know there will probably be a sequel.

On another, I feel like I need to think about this one

@tsarstepan,
I think you might like to read The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Most unusual sci-fi. It haunts me and I read it 5 years ago.

I just finished a book I hated for the first 91 pages (I checked) but kept reading because it was there, and involved Venice, Italy, and I like being reminded of that place. I probably got mildly interested at some point, but that never overrode acute aggravation. So I won't name it, to spare the author's psyche. I thought of it as grossly poor movie-precursor writing. Worse than Dan Brown.

@ossobuco,
Not fair, Osso. You can't tantalize us and then go...poof!

What if I'm just about to buy this book but am unsure, don't have much feedback, it's on sale, so I'm really tempted....you could save me from myself!

C'mon......title? or at least author?

@Pemerson,
definitely, Pem, I'll pm you.
Let me know if you ever want one of my reads..

I don't suppose you'd like a terribly written bad movie precursor? Then damn thing is, I bought two by this guy, though at a used book store so the price wasn't another reason to be highly irritated, though good will would have been better priced.

Kara, I'll pm you too.

@ossobuco,
Based on Osso's advice, I read "Night train to Lisbon".

As I like to know if the translations are good, I bought the three versions: French, English and German.

Contemplating the Italian version..

Really powerful plot, I liked it a lot.

Based on Calamity Jane's advice, I bought and read "The elegance of the hedgehog" in French and in English.

The English version is almost as good as the original in French.

Very elegantly written...
