My daughter is reading To Kill a Mocking Bird. I can't believe I hadn't read it until now, couldn't put it down and finished last night.

I absolutely love To Kill a Mockingbird! I bought the paperback many years ago and some pages were missing!!!! It turned out the whole lot had been printed with this mistake. I did get a complete one and still hold on to it.

The book I am reading at the moment:

Der rote Wolf by Liza Marklund.

Well?

He's a current prizewinning American author.

Today I ordered his "other" book from Google. Top man.

Yes, he is quite popular, and made a big splash, as far as authors go, a couple years ago.

But he's actually Russian. And from what I've read about him, his writing reflects that.

I intend to read Absurdistan in the near future; few Russian novelists have ever let me down.

He's the most un-Russian "Russian" author I've ever read; but he won't let you down.

Thanks for the article.

It's interesting--I've kind of been mining Gogol and Chekhov, and the former definitely flirts with the absurd. He's so funny. I might be a rare case who values Russian humor over their dark existentialism. I think I'll like Shteyngart.

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, by Robert Cialdini.

Even though I've had it for almost a month and am only on chapter 2, and there are other books I want to read too. I haven't had much time lately.

almost finished reading : DISHWASHER by pete jordan .
one man's quest to wash dishes in all fifty states .

quite an entertaining story . gives a good portrait of a certain section of american life . his best paying job was in the cafeteria of an alaskan cannery . he made about $1,000 plus free room and board - but he kept moving on .

from a review : "as compelling as jack kerouac's ON THE ROAD " .

he moved to amsterdam with his wife in 2002 to become a bicycle mechanic and writer !

I just finished "Virus" by Sarah Langan. Wish I hadn't started it, and was compelled to get to the end out of sheer curiosity.
Why did I pick it up in the first place? Because I thought it might be a bit like that movie "Breakout" with Dustin Hoffman.
I should be so lucky.
It (Virus) started off rather 'normal' so that by the time I'd got hooked, it was too late for me to go back, much like the ruddy 'Virus' I guess.
Better luck next time.. Twisted Evil

Hey Lorna, what do you think of "Dreams..."?

I just finished "Wicked." It wasn't what I expected, though I'm not sure what I expected. More Elphaba/ Glinda interactions, I guess, based on what I've read about the musical. Pretty impressive. Not completely satisfying. Not sure what I think about it yet.

re Lessing: I had to read 'The Golden Notebook' in school .... and that was all I actually read (more or less) completely.

And I didn't like her books from the 'Sufi period' at all.

Got her biographies out of the bookshelve, paging through them now ...
