Elyza, if you can't work it out on your own or with help from a parent, you should leave it blank. Your teacher needs to know what you do and don't know so he or she can help you.

35 +X = 66 + 35

35 + X = 101

X = 101-35

X = 66

X = 101-35

X = 66

Surely miller, it isn't even necessary to do that? Maybe I'm being dense here, but isn't the answer obvious just by looking? It's like this...

X + __ = Y + X

-- or --

an apple and __ _______ = an orange and an apple

Don't 'Y' and 'an orange' sort of leap out at you?

Good teachers teach the fundamentals and don't rely on a solution being "obvious". Once a student learns the correct way to setup a problem, all else is straightford.

As scientist, yes an orange and an apple do "leap" out at me. As a teacher, however, it's important to
teach a child how to setup a problem in an orderly fashion.

Learn the fundamentals as a child and you'll never made medication errors as either a professional pharmacist or physician or even nurse.

I was being dense. I understand now. Thanks, Miller.

The "referral to teacher" answer was correct. None of us here knows whether the intension was to teach "equations" or to teach "commutivity of addition".
