our city is essentially a university , college and military place .
the official population count is about 150,000 , spread over a fairly large area . the city itself is right on lake ontario but the rural area stretches about 20 miles to the east (st. lawrence river) and 25 miles north (canadian shield) .
with the loss/reduction in much of the heavy industry (ALCAN and DUPONT have shrunk considerably ) , there are now many seniors living in our city - many have come from toronto and montreal .
but come september the population increases by about 25,000 people : the university students , college students , RMC students (royal military college) arrive back in town !
i was downtown yesterday and the sidewalks and stores were crowded , cash registers were RINGING busily ! there was a lineup at the beerstore - it looked like there might be a shortage of LIQUIDS - but the beertrucks were bringing in fresh supplies
so our quiet town has come back to life again !
the football team and band will be marching through town to the stadium !
the cheers will ring out for the hometeam - fall isn't far away !
