A woman I used to work with became a grandmother on 9/11. Yes, that 9/11. She brought in pictures of her grandson and we oohed and aahed and then she was watching a little portable TV and told us all to gather 'round. And the world was not the same.
But it's not that child's fault, nor is it the fault of any child born on December 7th or November 22nd or any of a host of other awful days. Every day is awful and every day is wonderful and our birthdays are pretty much all just accidents of timing anyway.
If I was to see my friend and her grandson next Tuesday, I'd wish him a Happy 6th Birthday. Just like I would if he was born on the 10th or the 12th.
A birthday on 911 is actually the same as any other birthday, and should not be made to carry the baggage. I don't understand the linkage in people's minds. After all, that was just one day, in the receding past. A child's birthday is a wonderous event that goes on to be renewed each year. It's about the individual and nothing else.
(Hell, I "got cancer" on THE 9/11. Talk about a bummer of a day, watching the tv in the hospital lounge in a tharn of two horrors. On the other hand, I got it removed the next week and, in a way, that day was a lucky one for me - they found it and caught it.
That boy should have cloudless birthdays.....)
