If someone were to ask me the area of a square that was 6 inches by 12 feet, would it be appropriate to answer 72 inchfeet instead of 864 sq. in. or 6 sq. ft.?

I guess it depends on how you define "appropriate". I would say it is technically correct, but not appropriate since the unit you used is not in common usage.
