My finch

Reply Tue 21 Aug, 2007 05:13 pm
I think my finch may be dying.
And the real sad part is that the only affordable vet I know of is closed right now.
So I am HOPING.. someone may know what is going on, and I might be able to get some OTC meds for him.. ? If there are such things?

His wings look oily.
They did not look this way yesterday

He is sleeping..... ALOT

he has poop stuck to his butt.

I would think dehydrated, but .. I refilled his water just today and he has not drank a drop.
Should I use a dropper and give him some water?
His eyes are not leaking. His feathers are not falling out..

I dont know what to think..

He is a society finch.. if that helps:

No help from here, except that we had finches in our office, named after clients - and they died from some temp change. I forget which temp change after all these years.

Doesn't sound good - good luck.

I am sorry, shewolf. Sad

The florist shop, where I work part-time, has a society finch in the shop -- his job is to greet customers and he's very good at it -- even has his own fan club, people who drop in just to see him. They are darling birds.

I was trying to find info for you, and then I saw your last post. Again, I'm sorry. RIP birdie.

I so sorry to hear about your bird.

Very sad.

(I know nothing of pet finches... How long do they live?)

thanks.

I am not completely sure.
I think they only have about a 5 year life span.
I purchased him from petco.....yes I know..... a sin..
BUT-

He was fine and healthy from day one.
Never an issue until I saw him after I got home from work.

He was fine yesterday..singing.. happy.. eating..

And then today, he just went down hill. And quickly.
He very well could have been old. I wouldnt know.

I removed him from the big cage as I have two other finches and I didnt want disease or sickness passed on if there was any, and he lasted about 3-4 hours. Sad

Google pages indicate that the life span is 5-10 years for a society finch. Maybe he was just old....? Still odd that he was fine yesterday.

Yeah. I found that too.
I started googling life span and .. yeah.. he couldnt have been that old.
Petco has a high turn around for thier animals.
There is no way he was in there that long, nor would a breeder pass off a 10 year old bird.

He didnt come into contact with any....... oh..

ouch.
I just remembered.
2 days ago, I took him out to clip his nails and I let Jillian pet his head and touch his belly.
Of course , I did not have her wash her hands.
She had pneumonia for about 5 days .......

damn..
I guess it was my fault all along.
poor bird.

Wait...I'm not sure whether or not the human pneumonia virus can pass on to a bird.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your birdie Sad Society finches are really cool little guys.

Birds are hard when it comes to illness, though-- my mom kept all kinds of birds, and it was always really tough to do anything for them in time. That, and they are very susceptible to catching illnesses from people, sadly for your little guy.

And it seems like they're adapted to act like they're fine right up to the very last minute they can, so you really don't have a chance to do anything-- so don't feel too bad that you didn't have a chance to get him medication, I'm sure you couldn't have done anything by the time he was actually looking sick.

um, the pneumonia I know is from a bacterium, but there is also viral pneumonia. Whether either of those got to the bird is questionable.

Jillian doesnt have a viral pneumonia.
It is bacteria

Maybe it is impossible to give it to birds?
that would make me feel better

I'm sorry...of course, about your loss. I was remiss about offering my sincerest condolences. Unfortunately, I lost both my cats in the last 8 months so I'm all too familiar with feeling.

I like finches and those pix of that type of finch are neat. Cute little critters.

The avian World Health Organization will be in contact for a possible human-flu investigation.
