Coffee percolator simmering
roar of the Massachusetts Turnpike rush hour traffic
The sound of my biting into a MacIntosh apple...
We went apple-picking last Sunday. It was a great day for it: sunny,
clear, not too cool -- and the Patriots wouldn't be playing until
Monday night. At Shelburne Farm in Stowe we were joined by what seemed
to be half the population of Massachusetts. There was an inflatable
'bounce-till-you-barf', a maze made out of haybales, and an area for
riding around on miniature John Deere tractors. I thought "What great
idea for keeping the little ones occupied." Then I saw that you needed
to buy a "Fun Pass" to sample these delights. I thought "What great
idea for squeezing out a few more bucks from your customers."
They've also added fences around the orchards to make sure you enter
and leave by the stand that sells you the apple bags ($14 for a peck,
$20 for a half-bushel). I stood in line and bought a bag while Clive
and the Lovely Bride visited the outdoor facilities (free!). I bought a
half-bushel bag, which of course was overdoing it. I'll be eating a
lot of apples, making me a real regular guy.
To the Bride's disgust, they had the red delicious trees roped off.
"Do not pick apples beyond the rope" warned the signs. The Lovely Bride
respected the signs. It took her a while to find trees with
apple-bearing branches hanging over the ropes, but she did.
It always takes a lot less time to pick enough apples than you think it
will, even if you're, well, picky. So before long we were in line
once again, this time for cider doughnuts and apple cider. Huge
lines, both. The Bride took on the doughnut line, while I went
inside to get cider. After a very short wait, I put the cider back
(why am I waiting in line to buy something I can get at any
supermarket?) and went back out. The Lovely One - bless her - was more
patient and the cider apples were warm and tasty. Yum.
Stop-and-Shop supplied our cider needs and McDonough's Liquors
supplied the flavoring. Rum.
The signs of autumn continue to appear: turning leaves, tacky
Hallowe'en decorations, the Stoneham Spartan football team getting
pasted. I could really go for a piece of pumpkin pie right about now.
Re: What can you hear, while you are here?

A TV program, music, outdoor or indoor sounds, etc. No cheating---don't say you have the TV on the news channel when it's really on the cartoon channel--be honest. What's fun is if someone who posts right after you happens to be listening to the same thing you just posted.
I am listening to a song sung by Eric Clipton. The title is "Wonderful Tonight".
My Blue Heaven - Glenn Miller Orchestra
my watch alarm...must take Gbaby to play group!
people talking in the street in front of my house.
helecopter
(in Hawaii the pot farmers would grow faint thinking it was Green Harvest overhead)
Neighbour's damn car alarm yet again
commuter train whistle blowing
The Simpsons.
Dogs in the living room snorting at Setanta as they want a share of his curry beef noodles. Good luck.
people talking about something near the security post.
Something stirring in the basement
Try searching in the basement for whatever made the noise.
