Favorite prog rock bands

Reply Sun 3 Aug, 2003 05:49 am
I was thrilled to find out that my younger brother, who is quite a decent piano player, had really gotten into learning the ELP songbook I bought in junior high. I always liked ELP better than Yes, or any of the other prog rock bands, save for King Crimson, but they seem almost in a different category. Anybody out there have a favorite? Anybody think prog rock was just pretentious shite? Please share Laughing

Product of the 70's, "Progressive Rock" which mixed rock with classical and jazz influences. Shortened to "Prog Rock" at some point. This isn't great, but there are a few ELP sound samples on their official site:

I voted for Yes even though they could be totally pretentious. Actually, I'd also vote for ELP and even Rush if given half the chance. This was the soundtrack to my early High School life.

I love Rush too....I suppose they could be considered prog rock...I just always considered them a wicked Canadian band Laughing

I've always thought Yes WAILED! But, I'm preturbed, because I can't figure out WHAT MAKES SOMEBODY A PROGRESSIVE!!

Uriah Heep? Jethro Tull? Does it need to sound techno, or can it just use unusual instuments..?

I would say that Heep and Tull fall into the same category.

Among those listed, my favorite is Emerson, Lak & Palmer.

But I'd choose "other".

Thinking of Jethro Tull, PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) and After Crying.

Uriah Heep now sounds so dated!
Never a big fan of Marillion or Le Orme.

Continental European progressive is an important movement. Italy and the Czech Republic on top.

Ahhh...Tull! My favourite band, alomg with Queensryche, who I consider to be more prog-rock than metal.
Very Happy

Hmmm. I don't think I have EVER seen anyone accuse Tull of sounding "techno" before..... Very Happy
