Giants are the greatest team!

(There are two baseball leagues, the National League and the American League. The Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox are American League teams. The San Francisco Giants (formerly the New York Giants) is a national league team. The reference to Michigan derives from the Detroit Tigers, Detroit being in Michigan. The reference to Fenway Park derives from the name of the home field of the Boston Red Sox. Often, the Bostom team is referred to as the "Bosox," because there is another American League team, the Chicago White Sox, who are also referred to simply as the Sox; additionally, there is a National League team called the Red Sox--the Cincinnati Red Sox--however, they are usually just called "the Reds."

The National League is older than the American League, and by quite a bit. The National League was formed in 1876, and the American League was not formed until 1901. The Cincinnati Red Stockings was formed as a baseball club in 1863, and became a professional team in 1869 [professional teams would tour the country, playing the local home town team, and making their money from the gate receipts]--which makes them the oldest professional baseball team.)

More than just "another" team.

They are the greatest team ! ! !

(By the way, the Cincinnati Red Stockings were undefeated in 130 straight games in 1869-70, and were only finally defeated 8-7 in 11 innings by the Brooklyn team in 1870--that was a dramatic game, since a game is usually 9 innings, and only goes into extra innings if the score is tied. I believe the longest professional game on record was 23 innings. Several of the Cincinnati boys went to Boston to establish a professional team in 1870, and took the name "Red Stockings" with them--which is why there is also a Boston Red Sox team.)

You really want that explanation?

(Short version: The 1919 Chicago White Sox threw the World Series for money from gamblers, and were long referred to as the Chicago Black Sox as a result. The story is more complicated than that, and involves Shoeless Joe Jackson, who is a central character in the motion picture Field of Dreams.)
