Man ... she must've needed that operation like a hole-in-the-head!

When it happened, it must have been hard to face her friends.

Did they call her a pencil-neek-geek?

Wonder if people told her to turn the other cheek?

When asked if the Docs should operate, did they tell her to just write it off? Did she finally face the music?

Did they consider operating in Pencilvania?

Maybe she was in a socialist relgious hospital, where suffering equates to redemption.

socialist and religious? hardly. religion was kinda forbidden.

Uhm. There's a lot more today and in the past that's "socialist" than just the East European communist regimes of yore. When someone talks about "socialist" you can't assume that they're talking about the former Soviet (satellite) states.

While religion may have been kinda forbidden in communist Eastern Europe, for example, there's been a significant tradition of Christian Socialists in Western Europe and, of course, Latin America.

They never had their own hospitals though...

well, certainly. but this woman was in east germany, hence in eastern bloc. so no assumptions on my part, just going by the fact of this concrete story we've been discussing.

I have some doubt about whether Miller really had Latin American liberation theology in mind when she was making that remark.

But who knows what went through her head, eh?

Actually, in the early 50's noone dared to do such an operation.

(it was a slate pen, was that mentioned already? Here's the CT http://i11.tinypic.com/6cgp8bo.jpg )

And later, she didn't want to have it done. (Only now, because the headache and noosebleeding became worse and worse.)

Oh, I missed that - that she was from East Germany (it's not in the article). Fair enough then.

Well, it was done in that hospital because Professor Behrbohm is THE otolaryngologist in Germany.

THIS is the first/original BILD report.
