Uhm. There's a lot more today and in the past that's "socialist" than just the East European communist regimes of yore. When someone talks about "socialist" you can't assume that they're talking about the former Soviet (satellite) states.

While religion may have been kinda forbidden in communist Eastern Europe, for example, there's been a significant tradition of Christian Socialists in Western Europe and, of course, Latin America.

They never had their own hospitals though...

well, certainly. but this woman was in east germany, hence in eastern bloc. so no assumptions on my part, just going by the fact of this concrete story we've been discussing.

I have some doubt about whether Miller really had Latin American liberation theology in mind when she was making that remark.

But who knows what went through her head, eh?

Actually, in the early 50's noone dared to do such an operation.

it's not....i had to google the hospital-cause i wanted to know whether it's in east or west berlin :wink:

Origianally it happened in Dessau, and that's where she was/still is a teacher.

sigh. more googling.

Well, it was done in that hospital because Professor Behrbohm is THE otolaryngologist in Germany.
