Virtual friendships (this is a rather sappy post)

I, for example, am actually mean-spirited, dumb, and an utter stranger to humor and irony. You would never recognize me in real life. That's because you just don't get that on the internet, nobody knows you're a dog. But at least the people around you do, so that's a relief.

Get over here, you mean-spirited, dumb, humorless dog!

I've found the A2Kers that I've met IRL are bright, funny, warm, and caring -- just like I imagined they would be. I'm lucky to have a small group of A2Kers nearby that I see regularly and others who have ventured in from lands afar for larger gatherings. I haven't met anyone who I would not be proud to call 'friend'.

I'll let you know the next time I'm in the area, bear. And you damn well better let us know if you're ever in Chicago!

Be wary, JPB, be very wary! Apparently he's high maintenance but never boring!

Mame, I'll be curious on your feedback after your gathering in SF later this month. I've found meet-ups with other A2Kers to be great fun.

I am really looking forward to meeting these four gentlemen. I just hope CJ can make it out for one of the days I'm there. I plan to just hang with them and be entertained Very Happy

On the topic of internet friends that I haven't met IRL, there are plenty of folks here I haven't met that I care about on a personal level. There are a couple ladies I met on another now-kaput forum whom I truly value as friends. One has joined here but seldom posts and the other was MIA so we tracked her down by phone. None of us have ever met, but we've been friends for years.

Yes, I've become friends with two women from another board and we exchange gifts and visit, telephone, email. It's rewarding.

Why would all of us be chatting online on a Friday night if we didn't believe in virtual friendship?

I think its important to remember that the picture we build up of people we have not met can be misleading. Almost like a fantasy. The reality could be completely different, or not as good as we imagine.

Its fun and I do think you get a sense of people after a long period of time but you relly only get a sense of the person they want to show you.

Reyn said something like - virtual friends are good, turn em on when you want and off when you want.

Quite wrong there, dadpad. I've only had one in person surprise, and that's a very small percentage.

and then there are the ones like that rascal right above me - one phone call, and you just wanna meet him Very Happy

~~~
dadpad, it really is quite amazing. It'd probably be different if this was a site where people arrived lookin' for a hunny - and felt the need to appear to be 'someone' - but we're here to yak with friends (in great part) - so no big facades/masks. We've certainly seen the worst of each other at times (anyone follow my 'how much snot can my head hold?' thread? Confused ).
The most interesting thing to my friend, the Empress, who has travelled with me to a couple of get-togethers, is how we can spot another A2K'r without having seen photos of them. She just marvels at it.
