Is that

x 2+x

x squared plus x?

If it is, here's how to get the answer.

1. Ask yourself what is the number that, when you take 1 away from it, you get 11.

2. That number is three times as big as x. Now you know what x equals, multiply x by itself, and add x to the answer.

3. Pay more attention in class.
