Feeling = sentiment
good man = saint = st
embraced = hugged, encircled, included, all in together (anagram)
eminent characters = use the letters of 'eminent' together with 'st', mix 'em all up and get = SENTIMENT

Sorry if I seem pedantic; just thought every bit helps in decyphering cryptics!

Thanks for your input, we need any help with cryptics, after I have worked out the clue I sometimes forget how I did it so I am always pleased if someone else can explain, I don't think your pedantic I welcome you input.
