My PC has suddenly began operating very slowly on the Internet.

Cause?

Cause? Probably spyware, if it's sudden.

Cure? Earlier restore point. Maybe. And I say maybe - those suckers can be awfully persistent. And, yes, you can get spyware if you're on a Mac, in case you were wondering.
