It's great until you get one left overnight or brought in that has a chain embedded in it's neck...or lose one because it's so emaciated there's no coming back from death...

It's a rough gig, but if you can do it, more power to you. We need people like you who can stomach the atrocities that other humans can do.

I tried it. First day was my last day.

Onion, is there a university clinic near you?

Or an industrial clinic (doing truck driver physicals, and minor procedures)

Tetanus should not be real hard or expensive to do...

Any local family clinic will give you the shot. Probably cost you about $25. You could even call Planned Parenthood.

Good on ya for volunteering!

The SPCA is perfect for you since I know you want a career working with dogs.

Here's a success story for you:

My niece volunteered at a no-kill shelter and eventually went on to be the intake manager (talk about heartbreaking work). From there she was offered a job for a vet. Now she's the manager of the vet office and assists in surgery making about $60,000 a year.

It didn't happen overnight. She was a rehab baby with felony drug arrests and jail time shadowing her.

Volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door!

Plus, it makes you feel great about yourself, you get to be a hero.

You go, boy!

This is a worthwhile and important endeavour. I am glad to see that you have found something that you like. Don't get too attached to the dogs and puppies.

http://www.churchillcounty.org/socialservices/health.php

The Churchill County Community Health Nursing Services Office is located at 85 North Taylor Street in Fallon (across the street from the County Offices Complex).

Most services require an appointment. To set-up an appointment, or check the date of the next immunization clinic, please call 775/423-4434.

Services

Routine immunizations for infants and children starting at 2 months of age - Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Haemophilus Influenza type b.

Adult vaccinations for Tetanus and Diphtheria.

Gamma Globulin for Hepatitis A contacts by doctor's orders.

Yearly flu vaccine for the elderly or those with chronic health problems.

Pneumonia vaccine for the elderly and those with chronic health problems.

Fee
A minimal fee for immunizations is requested but not mandatory.

You can probably get immunization clinic schedules from these folks too. While you're talking with them, ask about how to go about getting that hernia repaired so you can find higher paying work and be able to better support yourself while going to college.

YAY! Good for you! Good for the SPCA. It is worthwhile.

I was originally going to grow up and become a vet, but after volunteering at a shelter I had to sit down and have a long talk with myself (and cry, some people can be so ghastly to animals). I decided another course was due for my life. I would have adopted every animal that came through and I would be in jail by now for murder for what some of those people did to those animals.
