The summer is in full swing, the end to it is in sight. The closing of July always makes me wonder: what am I going to be for halloween? I just saw Pirates of the Carribean and now I know - a pirate, argh! I need help. How do I make a pirate costume? I don't want it to be sexy, I want it to be good. I have the sword, of course (from Xena, circa 1998). What else? Can I make the boots from scraps or do I have to save up and buy some swashbuckling foot wear? What to do, what to do?
Pirate costumes are perfect for the Goodwill shopper.
poufy/puffy sleeved white shirts
black/brocade vests
big funky jackets or ankle lenth vests in a heavy tapestry (with gold thread) fabric
sashes/scarves at waist and forehead
grab a pair of dark wide legged pants for 3 or bucks and cut them off at mid calf with pinking shears
very tall suede boots can often be found at Goodwill/Variety Village type stores - it might take 2 or 3 browses for them to show up in the right size
hmmmmm, what's left - the hat and eye-patch
i think the hat would probably be the most difficult thing to find - probably have to grab it at a costumer
you've already got the sword (they show up at Goodwills pretty frequently here as well)
you're ready to go!
here's one without sashes
you can buy it for only ...

Wow, thanks Beth. I was thinking of making the boots (from the ankle up) and the hat myself. I think, just maaaaaybe, I have a dark eggplant pirate's shirt somewhere. I figure I'll tuck the pants into the boots and blouse them - no?
ooooooh, there's a place called Oak Island of the eastern canadian coast that has a burried treasure who's retrieval has stumped treasure hunters for hundreds of years.
hmmmmmm
the white shirt is kinda basic - you need the contrast with the topping layers - which are traditionally darker
you could build the boots up over a pair of shoes with brown felt, but it would probably cost more than buying boots at a Goodwill (heavy felt wasn't cheap the last time I bought some that wasn't in those little craft squares)
blousing pants could work. you'd definitely need to test it out to check the draping.
Well, if I find the shirt, I'm wearing it. If not, I'll have to find another. I have a redlace-up front soft corset thing to wear over the shirt.
No eyepatch for me - too much of a pain in the butt.
so - a girl pirate?
i think Oak Island is between you and Gezzy. I used to know about it. There are a few 'buried treasure' islands up in the Maritimes.
Yeah, a girl pirate. I was looking around and there were 2 of maybe 10 big-named pirates that were women. I knew they existed, but.... Anyway, the outfit is similar. As I was looking at the old lithographs I was thinking, hmmmm, the pirate outfits often didn't look much different than the civilian outfits.
Yeah, it's near the CA-US border
How can a female pirate not be sexy? Oh dang, me fetishes is showing.
On a more serious note, it's been a long time since I did any reading in this area. But it was my understanding that female pirates of the era like Mary Bonney often adopted men's garb as it was more practical for life at sea than women's clothing of the era. Which I guess means roll with a whatever male pirates wore (puffy shirts LOL?) at the time.
Um...that's not very specific advice. Sory.
I read, I've been surfing the web, that they wore men's clothing for attacks and landings, but wore women's clothing at other times. Who really knows.
I found me a parrot, arrr:

Why Women Love Pirates
Well hell, you gotta wanna be the attacking pirate, right? That's what the pirating lifestyle be about (aaar says I): the attacking, boarding, looting, and plundering.
Every one should adopt pirate lingo. And this holiday is coming up...
