Anyone know of any books with wilderness themes that are immersive? I am not interested in reading hiking stories, more interested in spiritual/instinctual journeys that involve nature/wilderness. I like to read these while hiking. My favorite book with this sort of theme is "Wild Animus" by Rich Shapero, anyone read it?
Hi wheatchaff,
"Woodswoman" by Anne LaBastille is a good one.
Hmmm.... maybe not what you're looking for, but Edward Abbey was always fun for me to read. Barbara Kingsolver always has an element of wilderness in her writings. I just read some writing by Henry David Thoreau. If you can take the somewhat archaic American English, read about his excursions into the Maine wilderness.
Desert Solitaire by edward abbey
"Lord Grizzly", by Frederick Manfred, is one of the best wilderness stories I have ever read. Recounts the true story of Hugh Glass' survival of a bear attack.
"Into the Wild" was another good one (don't recall the author), and if you are looking for survival adventure on the high seas you can not go wrong with "Adrift", by Steve Callahan, one of the greatest survival stories of all time.
I'll second littlek's suggestion of anything by Barbara Kingsolver. ("Into the Wild" was written by Jon Krakauer, Gus.)
(Gus, I recently bought it for my son as a counterpoint to his fascination for "How to Survive in the Woods", "How to Sh!t in the Woods" and the "Field Guide to Edible Plants and Berries". He leaves on his great adventure in a week...)
Winter by Rick Bass
Walking My Dog Jane: From Valdez to Prudhoe Bay Along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline by Ned Rozel
(much deeper than a typical hiking story)
I've read a few by Barbara Kingsolver (Poisonwood Bible, Animal Dreams). I should pick up some more of her work. Also, got any non-fiction suggestions? Wild Animus is fiction.
