I have no personal experience with maternity clothes, but maybe they put in some extra fabric in the front so that the front hem isn't hiked up?

I would think, but it may hike up in the front, just like mac11 warned. In that case, I'd wear it with leggings, either the tomato red or that pretty purple. Leggings are hot again and if you're young enough to be pregnant, you're young enough to wear leggings!
Now, if it's cute as hell you're after, I'd do a hot little kitten heel mule in red, bright toenail polish and maybe an ankle bracelet.

Yes it is the hem thing - there is more material in the front to compensate for the big belly.
